Description
This small wide-mouthed sheep bell is made of sheet iron and lacquered with brass. Bells were used by shepherds to help them locate their sheep.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'The origins of this small sized wide-mouthed bell are unknown. It is made of sheet iron lacquered over with brass. The sides are welded with one rivet each side and an envelope type flap at the top. It has a single staple, riveted along the length of the top, but no leather fastening is found. It measures 2.1 inches in width at the top, 2.9 inches at the mouth and 4 inches in height. The clapper which was once broken off has been repaired with a piece of iron, suspending it from the top of the bell. // See also 51/92M // 51/1225', No Lavinia Smith No. recorded
