This picking knife was used for picking the ends off the withies as a basket was made. It comes from Deerhurst, a village in Gloucestershire that was previously an important centre for the making of fruit baskets.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This tool was obtained by Mr. Massingham from the village of Deerhurst-on-Severn (Gloucestershire) which was previously an important centre for the making of fruit baskets. It was acquired in the middle thirties from an old man then aged 84 who had formerly been a basket maker. The knife was used for picking the ends off the withies as the basket was made.
