Description
Carriage lamps were used on almost any type of carriage, with one fastened on each side of the vehicle near the front. This lamp is rectangular in shape with ventilation holes at the top. It dates from the mid-nineteenth century. It belonged to the donor's grandfather, Thomas Pither, a Reading hansom cab driver, who used the lamp to see the fares handed up to him through an opening in the roof of the cab.
