Description
This mechanical quill cutter, the blade of which is broken, dates from the nineteenth century. It belonged to the donor’s uncle, a London bookseller who died in 1886. When cutting the quill, it must first be sliced with a knife before being inserted into the machine (if it is not sliced beforehand, a double nib is cut). The quill is inserted into the cutter from the outside and the metal cover is snapped down. When the quill is withdrawn, the nib is complete with a small slit in the centre.
