Description
This elaborately carved sheath, known as the 'scimitar' type, was used for holding a knitting needle, to enable the knitter to work rapidly. Such sheaths were often given as love tokens, and are thought to be particular to the north of England. It was worn on the right hand side in order to release the fingers of the right hand when knitting. It is made of painted beech wood.
