Description
This small mortising chisel, used for cutting mortices to create joints in wood, has an octagonal handle and a sharply bevelled blade. It has a rectangular steel balde, stamped with 'W. Butcher', and a wooden handle. It was used at R. Middleton & Sons' wheelwrights workshop in Eddington, Hungerford.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This mortising chisel was used in the Middleton’s wheelwrights’ shop at Hungerford (Berks). It is a small one with a sharpened blade only .25 inches wide. This blade is a rectangular piece of steel hafted to the wooden handle. The handle is 5.3 inches long and is oval in shape, tapering towards the point of contact with the blade. The total length of the tool is 9.5 inches. The top of the blade is stamped ‘W. Butcher’. // See 51/363.'
