This is a wheelwright's boxing auger, a tool used for making the box of the wheel nave (also called the wheel 'hub'). It measures a total of 46 inches in length, and has a metal support along the screw thread. It was used by the donor's father, who was a wheelwright and carpenter in Braishfield, Hampshire.
