Description
These 23 printing blocks, three sheets of paper, and box are part of a selection of items donated to the Museum by the Landscape Institute in relation to Michael Brown. These printing blocks come from one of four boxes, donated on behalf of the Landscape Institute, containing material related to Michael Brown and Geoffrey Jellicoe. This box contains 23 wooden stamps, all with various foliage and tree patterns. The box itself is cardboard, and has a stamped sticker, addressed to Michael Brown. Inside the box is three sheets of paper. Two are folded quarterly and have designs stamped on to them. The third is folded in half and shows a chart related to the blocks and their styles. He is also a Friend of the LI archive and recently deposited the Brenda Colvin archive. // The glass coaster with Latin writing has not been identified by anyone yet for its significance/relevance. // Annabel Downs, former Archivist for the LI and a landscape architect herself has checked through all this material and it's her notes on the outside with the boxes - her email address if you'd like to get in touch is [...]. // Sheila Harvey is the former Librarian for the LI and was involved in obtaining some or all of this material. Went to US to study furniure design as pg. at Uni of Penn but course full + recommended to do landscape design instead under Ian McHarg. Changed his life. He worked there for a few years + was asked back as visiting lecturer/prof? // McHarg had a layered approach // using tracing paper // to designing which Brown adopted + used rigorously. When selecting drawings from his [...] I wanted to collect an artefact which was representative of him. There were lots of tree stamps used in many of his drawings. Some of the stamps he carved himself. Some were bought in US I think.'
