Description
This is one of 157 duplicate 'silver' medals awarded to Ransomes, Sims and Jefferies between 1839 and 1889, and came from the company's Cape Town branch when the branch was closed. At the time of accession, the original medals were still in the possession of Ransomes. The original Victoria medal showed on the one side a wreathe with an inscription in it and on the other side there is a bust of a woman with the inscription 'HER MAJESTY QUEEN VICTORIA // PATRONESS'; this one-sided duplicate shows the bust. The original dated from the Southampton Exhibition in 1844.
