Description
This is one of 214 duplicate 'gold' medals awarded to Ransomes, Sims and Jefferies between 1839 and 1889, and came from the company's Cape Town branch when the branch was closed. At the time of accession, the original medals were still in the possession of Ransomes. The original medal showed on the one side a symbol with two snakes and on the other side there is a bust of a man with the inscription 'REPVBLIQVE// FRANCAISE'; this one-sided duplicate shows the symbol with the two snakes. The original dated from an Exhibition in France.
