Description
This candle bracket was designed to be fixed to the wall of a building. Like a cobbler’s or snob’s light, which is fixed on a wooden block rather than attached to a wall, the arm is jointed so that the candle can be adjusted horizontally, and there is a slide so that the height of the candle can also be adjusted.

Historique d'archive
MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This candle bracket from the Lavinia Smith Collection was designed to be fixed to the wall of a building. In principle it is similar to the cobbler’s or “snob’s” light (specimen no. 51/661L). But while the cobbler’s light is fixed on a wooden block, this type is designed to be fitted as a permanent feature on the wall. // The vertical iron section of the bracket measures 19.4 inches in height, its bottom having a hole through which a screw or nail is driven to fix it to the wall, while the top part is pointed so that it may be fixed into the ceiling. Joining the arm of the holder to the vertical is a slide by which vertical adjustment can be obtained. The horizontal arm is in three sections, the inner arm measuring 5 inches, the second 13 inches and the outer 13 inches. This arm is jointed so that it can be adjusted horizontally. The candle bracket itself is a hollow tube 2.3 inches high and 1.0 inch in diameter. When the arm is fully extended the bracket is as much as 36 inches from the wall.', MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 51/661 – 'This is a cobbler’s, or “snob’s”, light. The arm is jointed so that it can be adjusted horizontally. Vertical adjustment is provided by a slide which joins the arm to the upright. The base is a block of elm. The candle holder is tubular, made of sheet iron, mounted on a flat, metal base. There is a slide by which the height of the candle may be adjusted. // The stand measures 16.5 inches in height and the candle holder is 15.5 inches from it when the arm is fully extended.', No Lavinia Smith No. recorded., Heritage of the Hendreds Exhibition Catalogue 1969 - 'Catalogue of Exhibits // Number 5 // Snob's Light // Lent by The Museum of English Rural Life' (The description in the catalogue could also be in reference to 51/661)
