These carriage lamps were made by the firm Lowe, Sleight, Bevan & Co., and were bought by the donor at a horse sale in Reading. Carriage lamps such as these were used on almost any type of carriage, being fastened one on each side of the vehicle near the front. They are candle lamps, rectangular in shape, with ventilation at the top for the smoke to escape. There is a small round red window in the back so that the lamp showed a 'tail light'.

They are candle lamps, rectangular in shape with ventilation at the top for the smoke to escape. There is a small round window in the back so that the lamp showed a 'tail light'. One of the other sides has a brass reflector for the candle on the inside and the remaining two sides are glass. The panel containing the red glass opens so that the inside of the lamp can be reached. The top of the candle socket, which is made of brass, also lifts off for cleaning. Above the candle. there is a round opening, shaped like a port hole, which allows the smoke to pass upwards and out through the ventilators in the top. The outside is made of tinned iron, rimmed with brass, and one side there is a socket, which fitted into a slide on the vehicle. This could be tightened at the top by a screw. There is a round brass handle of 10 ins at the bottom so that the lamp could be carried upright... // The lamps were made by the firm Lowesleigh, Bevan & Co and they were bought at a horse sale in Reading.
