Description
This is a pair of curved scissors used by the donor's uncle for docking lamb's tails. He was a farm bailiff all his life. Until 1913 he worked at Model Farm, Shirburn, Oxfordshire. After that he worked at Rush Court, Wallingford, Oxfordshire, then finally at Howbery Park in Wallingford. The Arnold Veterinary catalogue for dogs in the MERL archive shows a pair of docking scissors but they do not resemble these. These scissors are more like scissors used for trimming horses and dogs. They may have been used in conjunction with another tool for docking lambs. They are inscribed, 'C[?] DEAKIN, SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND' and have a trademark in the shape of a horse's head.
Description physique

Dear Sir, In preparation for a prospective move we have turned out some family items we should have offered you before we left Reading in 1966. One item is a smock made, we believe to the Berkshire pattern. The other is a pair of curved scissors used by my Uncle when docking lambs tails! Uncle was a farm [bailiff?] all his life. Up to 1913 at Model Farm Shirburn then at Rush Court Wallingford, finally at Howberry Park Wallingford. We believe my cousin made the smock in the early days of the Women’s Institute. Do such items interest you. A stamped addressed envelope is enclosed for your reply. Yours truly, R. G. Andrews.’, Letter, MERL to Mr Andrews, 15 February 1983 – 'Dear Mr. Andrews // Thank you for your letter. I am interested in the smock and docking iron and would be pleased to accept them as a donation to the Museum's collections. If you still make trips to the Reading area perhaps you could call in one day with them. Otherwise, I expect we can make some other arrangements. // Yours sincerely, // Roy D. Brigden // Keeper', Letter, MERL to Mr Andrews, 22 February 1983 – 'Dear Mr. Andrews, // Thank you very much for sending the smock and the docking scissors. They are very fine examples and are ideal additions for our collection. If you are ever up this way I would be happy to show you the Museum. // Yours sincerely, // Roy D. Brigden // Keeper'
