Description
A nineteenth-century hand-forged open spade used for digging clay for brick-making. The handle is missing. The spade was found at the derelict brick works at Carisbrooke, Isle of Wight, and was probably forged by a local blacksmith.

Miscellaneous Note – 'This last century relic was found at the old derelict Brickworks, Carisbrooke. I.O.W. It would appear to have been handmade, and probably it was forged at the local blacksmiths nearby. Its use was for the digging of clay for making the bricks before mechanical methods were employed.’
