Historique d'archive
MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This is a box wheel churn, in which the butter is made by turning a wheel inside the box by a handle on the outside. It presumably stood on a table or bench in the dairy, unlike the plunger churn. // It is a strongly made rectangular box, made of birch, with two ends sloping inwards at the bottom, so that the bottom part of the inside of the box is the same shape as the wheel. Metal rods fastened with screws pass between the front and back of the box across this section, to strengthen the framework. There are three rods at each end. The wheel consists of two cross sections, making four arms, with slats set across each arm. This measures 10.5 inches by 8 inches. The handle passes right through the middle of the wheel into a hole in the side of the box and is detachable. It is made of steel and screws into the box. The lid is also separate with a wooden bar nailed across the top, with which to lift if off. The parts are separate because they had to be scrubbed carefully the keep the butter scrupulously clean. It is a strongly made churn because of the energy which must go into butter making. // The box measures 14.75 by 10.25 by 12.5 inches. Another name for this type of churn is PADDLE CHURN.'
