Description
15 bobbins used in making lace, and previously a part of the collections at Carlisle Museum. They are of different shapes and sizes and are decorated in a variety of ways, including with pink and green colouring. 14 are made of bone and one of wood, and all have thistle tops. The wooden one is decorated with pewter rings. All 15 bobbins have spangles – glass beads or ornaments attached to the bottom of the bobbin to provide additional weight

Visiting researcher note, Ann Dismukes (lacemaker), 1 October 2014 – A mixed lot, some larger some small; all but one bone; wooden one is very large with pewter rings; one very tiny thin one; one coloured green, some with pink colouring, some with green colouring; all spangled; all with thistle tops (apart from the green one from which the top is missing); one has tracing of wire at the base which would have crisscrossed the way up.
