Description
This is a tinted lithograph print from an original painting, 'Berkshire Pigs', by A. M. Gauci, of Tottenham Court Road, Camden, in 1868. The lithograph was also by A. M. Gauci, and the printer was J. Haddon + Co of Lombard Street, City of London. An inscription on the picture reads: 'Berkshire pigs fed on food seasoned with Thorley's condiment. Age 9 months + 23 days, bred and exhibited by John Treadwell, Esq., of Upper Winchendon, Aylesbury, Bucks. 1st prize at Smithfield Club Show, 1867, 1st at Aylesbury and 1st at Tring the same year.' It is one of a collection of paintings and prints thought to date from the last quarter of the 18th century to c.1860.

These include animals which had won prizes at the Smithfield Shows of 1834 and 1851… At the request of the Council, Mr. W. J. Cumber and Mr. P. M. Colebrook inspected the paintings and prints, and they were unanimous in recommending that the Club should purchase the prints and present them to the Museum… The Museum have agreed that the collection shall be recorded as The Royal Smithfield Club Collection.’
