Charter of Henry II to the abbey of St Sauveur-Le-Vicomte

A charter of Henry II for the souls of his grandfather, Henry I, his parents, Geoffrey of Plantagent and the Empress Matilda, and of himself and his children, confirming a grant made by Queen Adeliza (9d.1151) and William Count of Chichester, to the Abbey of St-Saveur. The grant consists of a mill (de molendino vivari) in the manor of Borna, yielding twenty shillings and a mill held by Godwin Beva and yielding fifteen shillings and land in the same manor held by Endric the millar and Mabilia. The place may be Bourn in Cambridgeshire or Bourne in Lincolnshire. The witnesses to the charter include Theobald, Archibishop of Canterbury 1139-1161, Henry of Blois; Bishop of Winchester 1129-1171 and William Count of Chichester who had originally made the grant. the name of Manasser Biset (elsewhere called dapifer) is written over an erasure.

On vellum. 5 1/8 x 7.5 in; 130 x 190mm 11 lines. Written in brown ink in a fine charter hand with fold at foot with slit for the seal, now missing. Creased and slightly stained, with small holes worn in two of the folds. Notes (12th, 15th and 19th century) on the dorse. Mounted in a folder.

The Benedictine Abbey of St Sauveur-le-Vicomte in the diocese of Coutances, Normandy. It was there in the thirteenth century when copied into the cartulary now in the Archives de la Manche. The comtemporary filing note on the dorse, Henricus rex anglie was no doubt written in the abbey as probably was the fifteenth century annotation de redditu in Borne.
