This is a pole shave, or rounder plane, used to round, shave or smooth out poles such as rake handles and wheel spokes. It has a polished wooden stock with straight handles and an adjustable blade stamped 'Warranted // I. Sorby // Cast Steel'. The shave belonged to Mr W. W. Field, a wheelwright in Winson, Gloucestershire. Mr Field retired circa 1960 and the business closed.
