Carpenter's Indenture: parchment
Historia del archivo
Indenture of apprenticeship between John Jones and William Fisher of Oxford, carpenter and joiner., These two documents provide the manuscript evidence of an agreement between John Jones, son of John Jones late of Oxford, and William Fisher of Oxford, carpenter and joiner by which Jones was apprenticed to Fisher for a seven year term. The indentures are engraved in a standard form on small pieces of parchment. Names, dates and other small details are inserted in a contempory hand in spaces provide in the text. The indentures were signed in the presence of William Marsh on 20th April 1781, the twenty first year of the reign of George 111. The master and apprentice both signed a copy so that each might retain an appropriate document as a record of the agreement. The indentures have small red seals and duty stamps. The writing on the back of the documents includes the words "Inrolled on Record so it is Walker 15 June" According to the terms of the agreement Jones paid his future master £8 in return for instruction in the work of carpentry and joinery and for the provision of lodging and food. The phrase "all other necessaries" included in the original draft, was crosses out in ink at the time when the agreement was made. The apprentice in his turn agreed not to waste his master's goods nor lend them unlawfully, not to commit fornication nor marry, not to play cards nor dice, haunt taverns nor play houses, and not to be absent without leave day nor night.
