Descripción
This plane is missing its blade, making identification difficult, but is probably a jack plane or fore plane, also known as a 'go faster plane' in Berkshire. Jack planes are used in the preliminary levelling of rough surfaces before smoothing. The stock of this plane is stamped 'C. Hunt' and it probably dates from the late-nineteenth century.
Descripción física
1 plane: wood; good condition but missing bladeThis plane which has a stock of 123cm long, is probably a jack or fore plane, although it is difficult to recognise due to the missing blade. The blade of a jack plane is usually basilled like a chisel on the underside of its cutting edge and it is slightly convex in shape. It usually projects farther than usual below the sole so as to cut deeply and quickly. It is used for preliminary rough surfacing, and is the first 'bench plane' to be used by the carpenter.
Historia del archivo
MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This plane which has a stock 16 inches long, is probably a jack or fore plane, although it is rather difficult to recognise due to the fact that its blade is missing. The blade or iron of a jack plane is usually basilled like a chisel on the underside of its cutting edge and it is slightly convex in shape. It usually projects farther than usual below the sole so as to cut deeply and quickly. It is used for preliminary rough surfacing, before the trying plane is applied for smoothing, and it is thus the first ‘bench plane’ to be used by the carpenter. The blade opening is 2.6 inches wide. // It has a hollow grasp handle and a beech stock 2.3 inches high by 2.85 inches wide at the sole. A stepped groove runs along the whole length of the bottom right hand side of the sole, and this is probably placed along a ridge of wood to act as a guide. The front top side of the stock is stamped ‘C. Hunt’.', No Lavinia Smith No. recorded.
