Mullers were used for heating ale or wine. This conical muller is made of copper and lined with tin, and would have been put into the heart of the fire in a vertical position. It comes from Culham Manor in Oxfordshire.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This muller came from Culham Manor (Berkshire) where it was known as a HOOTER, i.e. hooter. Ale was heated by placing the muller directly in the fire. // It is conical shaped and is made of copper lined with tin. It has a lid, which is hinged to the pan, and a handle. // The muller measures 7.75 inches in height. // See also 51/170 M.', Lavinia Smith Catalogue (D60/28) - 'A list of the contents of the East Hendred museum. The same sort of utensil from Culham Manor, Berks where it is called a "hooter [sic] i.e. heater.', Lavinia Smith Catalogue (D60/28) - 'A list of the contents of the East Hendred museum. (The Muller appears to be recorded twice in Lavinia Smith's catalogue on two separate lists - one perhaps made at a later date?)
