Sheet 68/583.’, MERL miscellaneous note –‘Notes made by James Arnold, “Rosendale”, Newton, Ledbury, Herefordshire: Mr Nott’s wagon. // Built about 1850 for Thomas C. Nott of Kyre, between Bromyard and Tenbury. Builder not known. In 1905 the Nott family moved to Brockmanton, near Leominster and the present name-board made and fitted. // The foreward rise of the body is much less pronounced than most Herefords. The body is panelled with 10 flat spars each projecting through the bed-piece by about one inch. Likewise the 3 spars on the front. Each side is divided by one mid-rathe. The barge-rathes, closely set to the top, are supported by 12 wood spindles. There is an additional ‘guard’ behind the hind wheels. The head-rathes are double. Dimensions 11’4” x 3’6”x1’9”. Removable thripples and side-boards, following the body-sheer, are supplied. // The broad wheels are flat-soled with 4’2” hoops with diameters of 48” and 54. The wheelbase is 73” and the track (centre to centre) 68”. The wheels run on iron axles. This waggon is considered one of the earliest in the area to have iron axels and hoops. // The faded colours are an indigo and v pale pink (salmon?). There is no lining out but the chamfering is very good. The name-board is gracefully lettered, with shading. The present MR Nott- great grandson- treats his waggon as a precious heirloom, along with some furniture that would make the antique boys’ eyes positively bulge.’
