This is a print from an engraving of a painting, entitled 'The Northumberland Ox', by J. Howe, c.1830. It was engraved by R. Scott. The ox was bred by Thomas Jobbing of Styford, Northumberland, to whom the print is dedicated. It is one of a collection of paintings and prints thought to date from the last quarter of the 18th century to c.1860.

This print of the Northumberland Ox, Bred and fed by Thos Jobbing Esqr. of Styford in The County of Northumberland is humbly dedicated by his moat obedient servant, Thomas Bennet. This remarkable animal was fed without tasting oil cake. His length was, from the nose to the setting on of the tail, 11ft 2in. Height at shoulder 5ft6in- Round the girth 9ft 11in- Round the breast and shoulder 11ft 3in- and across the Hucks 3ft 1in - His fore Quarters weighed 133st 11lb 9½ oz - His Tallow 20st 11lb 11½oz and his hide 7st 12lb - being in all 162st 7lb 5oz - at 14 pound to the stone - The quality of his Beef was so fine that it was sold in the Edinburgh Market by Thomas Bennet, The Proprietor at 1s 6d pr pound weight, who purchased the Animal, from Mr Thomas Hibbert of Glasgow, for 120 Guineas. // References: (P. W. calendar 1970 D82/4.', MERL miscellaneous note [The Royal Smithfield Club] – ‘A letter was received from the Museum in which it was stated that they had been given an opportunity to purchase a collection of paintings and prints of Farm Livestock executed during the period from the last quarter of the 18th century to about 1860. These include animals which had won prizes at the Smithfield Shows of 1834 and 1851… At the request of the Council, Mr. W. J. Cumber and Mr. P. M. Colebrook inspected the paintings and prints, and they were unanimous in recommending that the Club should purchase the prints and present them to the Museum… The Museum have agreed that the collection shall be recorded as The Royal Smithfield Club Collection.’
