This is a metal tool for grating nutmeg. It is oval in shape, with a box at one end, possibly for storing nutmeg. The grater itself is on a hinge, so that the grated nutmeg caught on the oval panel beneath can be removed. There is a ring at the end of the grater, possibly to allow it to be hung up.
