Descripción
This is a calf-muzzle, which is thought to be home made, though its origin is not known. It consists of a piece of leather through which iron spikes have been thrust, and was probably previously tied with string.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – ‘… // DATE ACQUIRED: // GROUP: // NEGATIVE: // PERIOD: // PLACE OF ORIGIN: // NUMBER: // DESCRIPTION: …‘Nothing is known of the origin of this calf muzzle, but it is obviously home-made. It consists of a piece of leather five inches wide through which iron spikes have been thrust. Seven of these spikes now remain, and each is approximately three inches long, but holes in the leather suggest that there were originally more than seven spikes. The muzzle was probably tied with string for short lengths of coarse twine were attached to the back of the muzzle when it arrived at the museum. The circumference of the muzzle is 6 inches. // See 52/176.'
