This wooden flower was made by a Gypsy man in 1952 from an elderberry stick. He made it to pass the time when he was ill and could not make pegs. Such flowers were stick onto evergreen twigs and sold at the door for 6d each by his wife. This wooden flower was bought in Sturminster Newton, Dorset.

MERL ‘Associated information’ form – 'Flower made by a gipsy [Gypsy] (man) about 1952 from elderberry stick. Made to pass the time when he was ill and could not make pegs. Flowers stuck onto evergreen twigs and sold at the door for 6d each by his wife. // Bought in Sturminster Newton, Dorset from gipsies [Gypsies] who were selling from door to door etc. but were soon to be permanently housed.', MERL miscellaenous note - 'flower is currently on temporary display in the "Gypsy Way Of Life" exhibition.'
