This is the iron cross bar from a set of beam scales for weighing butter. The pans, holding dairy produce and weights, would hang from the beam by the hooks at each end. Its origin is unknown.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This is the iron cross bar from which pans, usually made of wood, hung to hold dairy produce and weights. The pans belonging to these scales are missing. The bar is 12.25 inches in length, and has a loose swinging handle by which it was hung up. The bar curves upwards at each end and terminates in a loop.
