This oak stitching clamp originally came from Snowdonia in North Wales. The clamp acts as a vice into which a saddler would insert a piece of harness for stitching. He would hold the clamp between his knees as he sewed to maintain the pressure on the work.

Historia del archivo
MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This stitching clamp came originally from Snowdonia in North Wales and was given to Mr. Massingham by Mr. Harold Greening of Winchcomb [sic] (Glos.). // It is made of a piece of flat oak split to within 12 inches of the butt and with the two cleft pieces bent so that they meet again at the top to form a vice. The saddler pulled the vice apart and inserted a piece of harness for stitching. He held the clamp between his knees as he sewed to maintain the pressure on his work. It is a very simple but effective device.', MERL list / description [Massingham Collection, October 1989] – 'ACC. NO.: 51/184 // NAME: SADDLER'S CLAMP // NEG NO.: 35/138 // STORAGE: '
