A housen is a piece of decoration attached to the top of a horse's collar. This is a plain, flat, leather housen with a series of holes along the lower edge, and two holes in the centre. There are two rows on stitch holes along the top edge. The front is inscribed 'J L' and 'J L', one on each side. J L was likely the owner's initals. The housen is splashed with green paint.
