London Transport Museum Exit Record., London Transport Museum Access to Art Poster Transfer Document., Printed image of poster., Email, London Transport Museum to MERL, 30 December 2011 - 'Dear Sir/Madam, // London Transport Museum cares for one of the finest poster archives in the world, with over 40,000 transport posters, the majority of which are stored in our purpose built Collections Store at the Depot in Acton. // LTM has recently undertaken an audit of the entire poster collection which also included an assessment of duplication and considered options for ethical disposal and dispersal. // In consultation with the Museums Association and Transport for London and supported by funding from MLA Renaissance, we are offering up to 50 duplicate posters for transfer to relevant accredited museums. We have a number of posters which are available for transfer which could be relevant to your collection, please see attached jpgs of posters: // <<Harvest Time Spradbery.jpg>> <<Lantern Lecture unknown artist.jpg>> <<London's Country No.5 Elijah Albert Cox.jpg>> // It will be essential to meet the following criteria for the transfer: // -The acquisition fits in with your collecting policy (museums) or equivalent policy (other organisations) // -You can demonstrate the long-term benefit to your collection // -You can demonstrate opportunities for the public to access and engage with the posters // -You can provide adequate care for the posters // -Posters will need to be accessioned into your collection // - If at any point you intend to dispose of the poster or posters we request that they are offered back to LTM. // I include Museum Association’s commendation of this project: // “Overall, we think this is a good proposal that will bring increased public benefit, both at the London Transport Museum and at the museums which receive posters from LTM. We commend the responsible review of the collection that has identified surplus items. We also commend the realistic assessment of funding needs for collections care and acquisition.” // To discuss any potential transfer please do not hesitate to contact me. // Thanks, // Kind regards, // Veronica // Veronica Dominiak // Assistant Curator', Email, Guy Baxter to Oliver Douglas and Isabel Hughes, 03 January 2012 - 'Dear all, // My feeling is that these are probably more useful for the Object Collection than the archive. // I have sent a holding reply and would appreciate your thoughts. // Many thanks // Guy', Email, MERL to London Transport Museum, 03 January 2012 - 'Dear Veronica, // These look very interesting and the Museum of English Rural Life may well be able to offer them a good home. // I would be glad to respond to your requisite criteria in due course but need to know a couple of things prior to addressing things in greater detail. I can assure you though that we comfortably meet all of the criteria you have set! // Are the posters duplicates or material you already house or are they simply items that have been deemed no longer relevant to your collecting policy? Can I also ask what further information you hold about them in terms of their object biographies and/or their original production. Do you have any provenance in terms of prior ownership or sources for any of these specific items? // Out of interest, was this an Effective Collections project? // I look forward to hearing from you in due course but many thanks for thinking of us. // Best wishes and all the best for 2012, // Ollie', Email, London Transport Museum to MERL, 03 January 2012 - 'Dear Ollie, // Happy New Year to you and your colleagues. Thanks for getting back to me, and am delighted that you are interested in housing the posters. // The posters are duplicate spares, as mentioned previously we undertook a physical audit of the entire poster collection in January 2011, and we revealed that we hold 29,645 posters formally accessioned into the collection, an additional 11,251 listed as 'spares' which are items held by the Museum on behalf of LT/TfL but not necessarily part of the collection. Therefore we are now reviewing the use of this classification across collections as part of the audit process, with a view to either transferring 'spare' items into the collection or disposing of them accordingly. // All of the posters which I sent through to you have come from the London Transport Advertising and Publicity Department which are automatically transferred to us. // I believe this is a very effective collections management project as both sides are beneficial, LTM is mindful both of the high commercial value of the individual posters and the resulting inability of many smaller museums to buy copies relevant to their own collecting policies. What is more, our collection continues to increase in size, and we are rapidly running out of suitable storage space to house the posters appropriately. Removing posters from the stores will generate more room for future acquisitions. // I hope this answers your questions, and if you have any more than please do not hesitate to get in touch again. If you would be so kind to fill out the attached Expression of interest form and list the posters in order of preference I would be very grateful. // Thanks, // Best wishes, // Veronica', Email, London Transport Museum to MERL, 20 January 2012 - 'Hi Ollie, // I was just wondering whether you have had a chance to complete the Expression of interest form which I sent to you on the 3rd January. If you could fill this in as soon as you can that would be perfect, as we have had a lot of responses from accredited museums in regards to the poster transfers. // Thanks, // Kind regards, // Veronica', Email, MERL to London Transport Museum, 23 January 2012 - 'Dear Veronica, // Please find attached the completed Expression of Interest form, as requested. Sorry again for the delay in completing this for you. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any further questions. // Best wishes, // Ollie', Email, London Transport Museum to MERL, 26 January 2012 - 'Dear Ollie, // Thanks for your e-mail, we will review the expression of interest form and get back to you soon. // All the best, // Veronica', Email, London Transport Museum to MERL, 17 February 2012 - 'Hi Ollie, // Apologies for taking so long to get back to you, however I am pleased to say that we will be able to transfer all 3 posters to the Museum of English Rural Life.
In this case I would like to move things forward and arrange a date for the poster transfer. Setting a day may be slightly tricky as I am only in on Thursdays and Fridays. The posters are stored at our depot in Acton, so I'd be happy for you or one of your colleagues to pick them up from there. Would any of these dates suit you for the poster transfer: // 24th February (Friday) // 2nd March (Friday) // 8th March (Thursday) // 9th March (Friday) // Hope to hear from you soon, // Thanks, // All the best, // Veronica', Email, MERL to London Transport Museum, 18 February 2012 - 'Dear Veronica, // This is fantastic news. I'll discuss it with colleagues this week coming. // I appear to be free on 8th but I'm not sure the Museum van will be free. On the flip side, I suspect the van will be free on 9th but I'm not sure I am. I'll check the details and dates on Monday but lets aim for me to collect one or other of these days. // Many thanks again, // Ollie', Email, Guy Baxter to Oliver Douglas and Veronica Dominiak, 21 February 2012 - 'Ollie // I have to go to that OSL meeting on 8th so will probably have my car - I could feasibly go to Acton in the morning and drop the posters back at MERL. // Guy', Email, London Transport Museum to MERL, 23 February 2012 - 'Hi Guy, // Thanks for your e-mail. Thursday 8th is good for me, what time were you thinking of arriving at the depot? Would 11am suit you, or is this too late? // Ollie- I will reply to your e-mail in regards to packing requirements and poster dimensions. // Thanks, // Kind regards, // Veronica', Email, MERL to London Transport Museum, 23 February 2012 - 'Hi Veronica, // Our conservator Fred said: // Hopefully the posters are unframed or not mounted on board. Rolled up in a cardboard tube is by far the safest method for transport. // They are most likely either folded or in tubes. If not, let me know and I’ll devise a plan on how to transport them safely. // Just let us know details and we can liaise with Fred! // Best, // Ollie', Email, London Transport Museum to MERL, 23 February 2012 - 'Hi Ollie, // Yes you are right, the posters are unframed, however they are certainly not folded or in tubes, they must all be stored flat (they are backed on linen) and we have plan chest drawers for them, and would advise to store them as such. // In this case their ideal way of packing would be transported flat, however alternatively they can be rolled in a poster tube (only if they will stay like that for a couple of hours). I am happy to roll them up in a poster tube for you, or if you do have an A0 portfolio it might be worth taking this with you. // 2 of them are double royal (1016mm x 635mm) and the 3rd is 762mm x 508mm. // I am happy to sign an object entry record on the spot, and will also have an exit form and a poster transfer document for Guy to sign once he comes to collect the posters. // ... // I'll wait for Guy to contact me about the time of the pick up. // Thanks, // Best wishes, // Veronica', Email, MERL to London Transport Museum, 23 February 2012 - 'Hi Veronica, // Fred says he will make up a portfolio at the requisite size as he’s not happy about linen-backed items being rolled. // Best, // Ollie', Email, London Transport Museum to MERL, 23 February 2012 - 'Perfect, the portfolio is the safest and most easiest way I believe. // All the best, // Veronica', Email, London Transport Museum to MERL, 02 March 2012 - 'Hello all, // I would just like to find out whether Guy will bring with him a suitable portfolio for Thursday 8th? If you could please let me know asap that would be great, as my next day when I am at London Transport Museum is the 8th so if I have to prepare packing I would need to know soon. // Thank you, // Looking forward to the poster transfer! // All the best, // Veronica'
