A round shave, also known as a 'drawing knife', is used by coopers for shaving the joints between the staves in casks and for cleaning their insides, and by other craftsmen for hollowing bowls. Lavinia Smith acquired this round shave from Nat Slade, a wheelwright in Wayford, Somerset. It is a two-hand round shave with a semi-circular blade stamped with the initials 'J.S.H', although the handles are missing.
