Description
This is a pyrimid shaped glass cloche used for protecting plants, also known as handlights. Metal frames lights were used to protect tender shrubs and smaller plants including vegetables. The swiveling lid was designed to give ventilation or access when the base was frozen to the ground. This example was used in the garden at Stanmere House near Brighton, a country house of the Earl of Chichester.
