Description
This box iron was made in Cornwall circa 1889-1890 by a blacksmith called Crane – his name is marked on the inside. It was used by the donor for 67 years until she purchased an electric iron. Box irons came into use in the eighteenth century. This iron has a turned wooden handle, a guillotine shutter, and a hollow base into which a heated block which was warmed in the fire would be placed.
