Description
This steel single action snuffer is plated with silver. It is delicately designed; the finger holes are octagonal and each handle consists of two pieces of curved and polished metal, joining the finger holes to the rectangular box. This box is fitted to one blade, the other having a flat piece of metal which carries the cut wick to the box and extinguishes it. It was formerly part of the collections at the Victoria & Albert Museum, but nothing is known of its origins before that. It dates from the 18th century.
