Description
A round shave, also known as a 'drawing knife', is used by coopers for shaving the joints between the staves in casks and for cleaning their insides, and by other craftsmen for hollowing bowls. Lavinia Smith acquired this round shave from Nat Slade, a wheelwright in Wayford, Somerset. It is a two-hand round shave with a semi-circular blade stamped with the initials 'J.S.H', although the handles are missing.

MERL Miscellaneous note from conversation with Alistair Simms (Master Cooper), 3 September 2014 – A cooper uses a round shave to level off the staves in places that can’t be reached with an inside shave. Single-handled round shaves are often used for smaller work such as buckets and piggins., MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'Miss Smith obtained this shave from Mr. N. Slade of Wayford (Somerset). It was used by coopers for shaping barrel staves. The wooden handles are missing. The blade is semi-circular and sharpened on the inside edge. It is stamped with the initials J.S.H. and measures approximately 14” in length, although the cutting part itself only measures 5”.', Lavinia Smith Catalogue (D60/28) - 'A list of the contents of the East Hendred museum.
