The purpose of these tongs is not known, although it has been suggested that they may have been used to make the links of chains. The donor acquired them in Darley, North Yorkshire.

MERL Recording form – ‘… // Additional information: Really very little information. It came from Mr Jackson – Mill Farm – Darley. But I think he had purchased it in a lot of scrap at a Farm Sale. He knew nothing of its use or history & it is new to me. The only clue I have is that some time after acquiring the tool my son saw a television programme showing an engineering works & he informs me that a similar tool was used to make links of chain. //…’
