Parting dishes were sent out to the fields, particularly at harvest time, with vegetables on one side, Yorkshire pudding on the other and meat resting on a trivet above, and were also used as a cooking utensil. Lavinia Smith recalls seeing them carried around as late as 1925, but it is not known how she acquired this parting dish.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'Parting dishes were sent out to the fields, particularly at harvest time, with vegetables on one side, Yorkshire pudding on the other and meat resting on a trivet above. They were also sent to the bakehouse on Sundays when the week’s joint was to be cooked, and sometimes as a cooking utensil. Miss Smith recalls seeing these dishes being carried about as late as 1924 or 1925. // They are of slipware, that is a type of earthenware, covered with a brown glaze and ornamented with a design in white. // The dish measures 12 inches by 9 inches.', Lavinia Smith Catalogue (D60/28) - 'A list of the contents of the East Hendred museum. These used to be sent to the harvest field with the vegetables on one side and Yorkshire pudding on the other with meat resting on a trivet above. The parting dishes were also sent to the bakehouse on Sundays when theweek's [sic] joint was to be cooked. I remember seeing these dishes being carried about as late as 1924 or 25. Lord Ernle told me that they were now rare. The largest dish belonged to Mrs Anns. The next in siz [sic] was given to me by Mrs Albert Stone who had had it from Mrs Betteridge who had got it from her mother Mrs West who for many years lived at the Abbey Manor Farm.'
