This is a spring balance, a type of weighing scales, that weighs up to 56 gals and was used for weighing milk. This came to the collection as part of the Sharp collection.

Bestandsgeschichte
The Sharp Collection of agricultural and dairying equipment was compiled by Reverend C. J. Sharp at Wonersh, Surrey. Reverend Sharp died in 1967 and the Museum acquired the Collection for £60 in 1968., MERL ‘History Artefacts’ cards - ‘BALANCE // Marketing- Dairy Produce- Milk // Rev Sharp // Notes: Description: A circular brass balance. The ring for hanging it up is also brass. The ring from which the object to be weighed is suspended is made of iron. The pointer is made of iron. The face is calibrated in prints and gallons up to 30 gals and in gals and ½gals thereafter up to 56 gals. Use: for weighing balance.’
