This is a set of balance scales, which were used for weighing butter ready for sale. This came to the museum as part of the Sharp collection.

Bestandsgeschichte
The Sharp Collection of agricultural and dairying equipment was compiled by Reverend C. J. Sharp at Wonersh, Surrey. Reverend Sharp died in 1967 and the Museum acquired the Collection for £60 in 1968., MERL ‘History Artefacts’ cards - ‘SCALES // MARKETING DAIRY PRODUCE BUTTER // Source: Rev Sharp // Notes- Description: Wooden butter scales made of beech wood consisting of a round base and central pillar. The beam passes through a slit in the pillar and is fixed by a pin. The saucer shaped paws are suspended by three tapes and are made of sycamore. Use: for weighing butter.’
