MERL Miscellaneous note, Greta Bertram, 5 March 2014 – The Burne-Jones collection of thatching and other tools was put together by the donor while living in Membury, Devon, some time prior to 1966. She had planned to open a private museum. The tools came from the workshop of Mr Spiller, a thatcher from Yarcombe, Devon, and were in regular use until his death in 1962. He had thatched in the area his whole life, and his widow passed on his tools. By 1966 the donor had moved to Oxfordshire and no longer had room for the Collection so donated it to MERL., MERL ‘History Artefacts’ card – ‘Id.no: 66/315 // Object name: MOULD // Other name: Cheese Vat or Chesset // … // Description: A wooden cheese mould or hoop made from oak staves and with no base. The staves are held together by two metal bands rivetted into position. This type of mould would be placed on a circular piece of wood (cheese board) about 1 ½” thick and would have been used for a cheese requiring a small amount of pressure. There is a rim 1 cm wide 2 cm down inside the mould upon which the lid would rest. // Use: For moulding and draining cheese.’, MERL ‘Handwritten catalogue’ – ‘CHEESE MOULD // 66/315 // PROCESSING Milk Cheese // ... // Part of a cheese-mould bought at an auction in Axminster, 1964. Originally from Longbridge, Membury. // [pencil drawing] // Diamter 11 1/2 inches // All wood with small 3/10ths inch wide lip inside. 2 large metal bands on outside each 1 3/10ths wide.'
