Beschreibung
This jar, also known as a 'spigot', was found in the cellar of Smithy Farm in Bunglawton, Cheshire, when she moved there in 1930. It is an earthenware jug with a brown glaze and incised rings around the base of the rim. There is a taphole near the base. It is of exactly the same type that the donor remembered her mother using for storing wine.

Bestandsgeschichte
MERL miscellaneous note, Greta Bertram, 5 November 2012 – Mrs Stringer donated to jars to MERL – one belonged to her mother and the other was found in the cellar of Smithy Farm. The MERL ‘Associated information’ form and Adlib appear to be muddled as to which is which. 59/344: the MERL ‘Associated information’ form states that this was used by the owner’s mother, whereas Adlib states that this was found at Smithy Farm (it matches the drawing given in a letter from Mrs Stringer of the jar found at Smithy Farm). 59/345: the MERL ‘Associated information’ form states that it was used at Pickmere Hall Farm, near Knutsford, Cheshire, as does Adlib, but there is no indication as to whether this is where the donor’s mother lived.
