Beschreibung
This horn beaker is carved from a single piece of horn, and is decorated with carved grooves on the inside which give the appearance of black rings on the outside. It was used for serving drink. It is made from a section of a bullock's horn which has been cleansed, scraped, polished and pared away. Lavinia Smith acquired it from Rose Hine, who was married to George Hine, a roadman in the East Hendred area.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This mug has been carved entirely from one piece of horn. Grooves have been cut on the inside of the mug, which give an appearance of black rings on the outside. The sides of this mug are rather thicker than is usual. // Miss Smith obtained it from Mrs. George Hine, who probably lived in the neighbourhood of East Hendred (Berkshire). // The mug measures 2.25 inches across the mouth and 5.25 inches in height. // See also 51/626.L', MERL 'Catalogue index' card – [51/626] – ‘A horn mug was made form a section of a bullock’s horn, cleansed, scraped, polished and pared away inside to make a thin lip. A groove was then cut all round inside about ¼ of an inch from the bottom and a flat disk fitted tightly into it. // It was usually necessary to soften the disk by heat so that it could be forced into place. Sometimes, however, the whole of the mug was carved out of one piece of horn.’, Lavinia Smith Catalogue (D60/28) - 'A list of the contents of the East Hendred museum. July 5 1940 // 420. One old horn cup marked with rings. Mrs Geo. Hine. // One small horn cup given to me by Isabel Robinson.'
