Beschreibung
This lead hearth ornament, which may instead be a door stop, was found in the donor's house when he moved there. It is shaped like a dog. It is thought to date from c.1800, and is very similar to another one seen locally which was thought to have been made at a local smelt mill in Rookhope, County Durham.

Made of lead a very similar one seen in a farmhouse at Rookhope, was said to be of local manufacture - which seems reasonable as a considerabl [sic] smelt mill worked there from the late 19th to shortly after the 1914 war. // Hor was it used (if not obvious) // Hearth ornament, or door stop. // Any other information // Left by previous occupier in cupboard in house I previously occupied here.'
