Bestandsgeschichte
MERL ‘Associated information’ form – 'Age. // The Fiddle was most likely taken over by W. E. Oates when he bought Overhall Gestingthorpe Essex and 'The Elms' Farm which he bought in either 1890 or '91. // Who used it and where? // Used by farm workers on the above said farm up to about 1937 when bought by self in a sale at this farm. // Any other information // I am told by my agent, when the farm was in my possession, that the fiddle is still used in Suffolk + considered the most efficient hand broadcaster.', Letter, Miss Oates to MERL, 29th June 1956 - 'I am wondering if your Museum would like, what at my old farm in Gestingthorpe Essex, was called a 'fiddle' for broadcasting seed clover grains etc. by hand. The fiddle is in good condition and I should say was used on my mother's farm until about 1900-1910 perhaps even later. It was on the farm I believe when the farm was bought by my father in 1890-1. If you have not already a similar implement I shall be glad to present it to the museum...'
