Beschreibung
This hammer came from the wheelwright's shop in Braishfield, Hampshire, which belonged to the donor's father. It is a carpenter's riveting and saw hammer. The head consists of a rounded driving surface at one end and a thin pointed wedge, called the peen, at the other. The peen was used to spread the heads of rivets and to set the teeth of saws, when the saw blade was held in a clamp and its teeth bent alternately to left and right by blows from the hammer. The head is set on a wooden handle which passes through an eye in the centre of the head.
