Beschreibung
These large curved callipers were used by a wheelwright in Writtle, Essex, when making the naves of wheels. The nave is also known as the 'hub' of a wheel, and is the central block from which all the spokes radiate. Callipers are used to measure diameter, radius, or the distance between two points. The callipers were also used by the wheelwright's father and grandfather, both of whom had also been wheelwrights in the same village.
