This iron side stay came from an Essex wagon and was found in the workshop of Messrs Wallace and Sons, wheelwrights of Writtle, Essex. Side stays of this type were to hold the races, or surboards, in place. This side stay was likely fitted to one of the curved wooden strouters that kept the side of the wagon rigid.
