MERL Miscellaneous note- Georgia Charitou-20 November 2014- This was bought by the donor at a 'Save the children Charity Auction' in Reading in Summer of 1979. Ransomes New Pattern Edge Trimmer, will cut the grass on the edges perfectly, as fast as a man can walk. The cutters are of the best steel, renewable, and large enough to cut the deepest edges, and by anew arrangement, the height of the handles and the depth of the cut can be regulated at pleasure; The cutters can by the same means be raised clear of the ground for moving the machine across a lawn. It is recommenededas the best edge cutter ever made. Will be found an immense saver of labour in a large garden. With it the grass edges can always be kept neat at small expense. The price is £200. This edge trimmer was a new model in 1906 but was not the first Ransomes trimmer. A 'new patent lawn edge cutter' was advertised in May 1887 having won a medal in an 'Inventions Exhibition' 1885. This machine had a conical roller which was tilted to vary the depth of the cut. (Ransomes scrapbook, TR RAN ET3/32)
