Beschreibung
Not much is known about the origins of this stone, which was identified upon its entry to the museum as a 'plough stone' or 'pebble'. The donor suggested that it may have come from the site of Newstead Roman fort near Melrose, or from 'Dryburgh Mains'

MERL miscellaneous note - 'Dear Mr Higgs, // Here is one of the pebblies, entirely characteristic except for its being red-veined quartz insead of white, which is the commonest here. I send you this particular specimen because I don't know where exactly it comes from, although ten to one it is either from the site of Newstead Roman fort near Melrose, or from Dryburgh Mains just across the Tweed from there. I think British prehistorians are to some extent on the look-out for them - at least there was a note published in Proc. Prehist. Soc. 1939 - but no one, not even ourselves, has published the fact that they have any. I think it possible that Rainbird Clarke of Norwich may know of some from that part of the world.
